Darkmail: Lavabit und Silentcircle arbeiten an neuem Mail-Standard

Kurz nach dem der E-Mail Anbieter Lavabit Anfang August seinen Betrieb einstellte – inzwischen steht fest: Lavabit reagierte mit der Kurzschlussentscheidung auf den Druck amerikanischer Nachrichtendienste, die den ungehinderten Zugriff auf die vorhandenen Nutzerdaten forderten – strich auch die für iPhone und iPad-Nutzer zugeschnittene Lösung Silentcircle ihre Segel.

Um ähnlichen Auseinandersetzungen mit der NSA aus dem Weg zu gehen, stellte Silentcircle sein vollverschlüsseltes E-Mail Angebot am 12. August ein. ifun berichtete damals über die präventiven Maßnahmen der Verantwortlichen:

We’ve been debating this for weeks, and had changes planned starting next Monday. We’d considered phasing the service out, continuing service for existing customers, and a variety of other things up until today. It is always better to be safe than sorry, and with your safety we decided that in this case the worst decision is no decision.

Jetzt haben sich Lavabit und Silentcircle zusammengeschlossen und arbeiten unter dem Namen „The Dark Mail Alliance“ an einem neuen, Ende-zu-Ende verschlüsseltem E-Mail Standard.

Spoezifikationen sucht man auf der offiziellen Seite der Initiative derzeit noch vergeblich – das Projekt gilt es jedoch im Auge zu behalten. Wir melden uns, sobald die Fortschritte zu vermelden sind und erste iOS-Anwendungen bereitstehen.

As founding partners of The Dark Mail Alliance, both Silent Circle and Lavabit will work to bring other members into the alliance, assist them in implementing the new protocol and jointly work to proliferate the worlds first end-to-end encrypted ‚Email 3.0‘ throughout the world’s email providers. Our goal is to open source the protocol and architecture and help others implement this new technology to address privacy concerns against surveillance and back door threats of any kind.
